The stadium was renovated several times. It is used by the national football team of Peru. In 1930, they played in the inaugural FIFA World Cup. Peru lost their first-ever FIFA World Cup match on 14 July 1930. They faced Romania in that game. The second FIFA World Cup match for Peru, which attracted a crowd of 57,000, ended in a victory for Uruguay. The national football team of Uruguay won the inaugural FIFA World Cup.
2004
The Estadio Nacional hosted its first seven games for the Copa América in 2004. The first of those seven games took place on 6 July 2004. The national football team of Colombia won the match after beating Venezuela. Later that day, Peru faced Bolivia in the second Copa América game at the Estadio Nacional. The match ended in a draw. The following games were won by Colombia, Peru, the Argentine Republic and Brazil. On 25 July 2004, the Estadio Nacional hosted its first-ever Copa América final. The national football team of Brazil defeated the Argentine Republic in a penalty shoot-out.
2005
In 2005, the Estadio Nacional hosted its first-ever final for the world championship for national under-17 football teams. The match was won by the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico, after defeating Brazil in front of tens of thousands of fans. Carlos Alberto Vela Garrido, Omar Alejandro Esparza Morales and Éver Arsenio Guzmán Zavala scored for the Mexican team in the final. The Estadio Nacional also hosted the third-place match for the tournament. John Goossens scored twice for the Netherlands in that game. Nuri Şahin scored the only goal for Türkiye in the third-place match.
A stadium disaster
A stadium disaster took place at the Estadio Nacional on 24 May 1964. The disaster took place during a football match between Peru and the Argentine Republic. A crowd of 53,000 showed up for the game. A decision of the referee outraged Peruvian fans, who invaded the pitch. The police reacted by firing tear gas into the crowd. This caused a mass exodus. 328 people were crushed to death following the mass exodus.
