Football crowds at the venue sometimes reached above 50,000. Several football clubs played home games at the stadium. The national football team of Paraguay played numerous home games at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco. In 1930, they played two games in the inaugural edition of the prestigious FIFA World Cup. Paraguay lost the first game against the national football team of the United States. They won their second game against Belgium. Both world championship matches took place in Uruguay.
