The stadium named Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo is also used for athletics. On 9 July 1991, the venue hosted its first game for the Copa América. The national football team of Chile won the match against Peru 4-2 in front of 18,000 fans. A few days later, the Argentine Republic won the second Copa América game at the Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo 4-1.
The 2015 Copa América
The Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo was renovated in time for the 2015 Copa América. It hosted three matches for the tournament. The first one took place on 27 June 2015. A crowd of 29,000 showed up for the continental championship game between Brazil and Paraguay. The national football team of Paraguay won the match after beating Brazil in a penalty shoot-out. The Argentine Republic won the second 2015 Copa América at the Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo. They faced Paraguay in that game. The third one was won by Peru after defeating Paraguay.

Club Deportivo Corporación Arturo Fernández Vial was founded in 1903. Club Social y de Deportes Concepción was founded in 1966. Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción was founded in 1994. All three clubs played in the top-flight football league of Chile. In 2009, CD Universidad de Concepción became the first football club from Concepción with a Chilean cup title. They won the title after winning a final in Coquimbo. The final took place in front of a crowd of 17,000. In 2015, CD Universidad de Concepción won the Chilean cup tournament for the second time in their history.
