The stadium was renovated in time for the 2015 Copa América. It hosted three games for the continental football championship. The first one took place on 13 June 2015. The match between the national football team of the Argentine Republic and Paraguay ended in a 2-2 draw. 16,000 spectators showed up for the game. Later in 2015, the Estadio La Portada hosted five matches for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Belgium, Brazil, England, Guinea, Korea and Mali played at the venue during the youth football tournament.

Deportes La Serena use the Estadio La Portada for home games. The club was founded in 1955. In 1959, Deportes La Serena played in the final of the Chilean cup tournament for the first time in their history. It was the second edition of the Chilean cup tournament. The Santiago Wanderers won the Chilean cup tournament that year. In 1960, Deportes La Serena won the Chilean cup tournament for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating the Santiago Wanderers at the Estadio La Portada.
