The stadium was one of the 1962 FIFA World Cup venues. The national football team of the Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina, won the first-ever FIFA World Cup game at the stadium. They won the match after beating Bulgaria 1-0. Héctor Osvaldo Facundo scored the only goal of the game. The national football teams of England and Hungary also played at the Estadio El-Teniente-Codelco during the group stage of the 1962 FIFA World Cup. In 2015, the venue hosted two Copa América matches. The national football team of Venezuela won the first one after defeating Colombia. José Salomón Rondón Giménez scored the only goal of the game, which attracted a crowd of 12,000. Ecuador won the second one after beating the United Mexican States.
O’Higgins
O’Higgins use the Estadio El Teniente-Codelco for home games. The club was founded in 1955. O’Higgins became one of the first sports clubs from Chile with a value of at least $10 million. In 2013, they were crowned football champions of Chile for the first time in their history. O’Higgins won the title after beating Club Deportivo Universidad Católica in front of a crowd of 40,000.
