The venue, nicknamed Trapichão, opened with a football match with 45,000 people in attendance. It is named after the former Brazilian football star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, commonly known as Pelé. He was named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Pelé played professional football for Santos FC and the New York Cosmos. He scored twice in the 1958 FIFA World Cup final. Pelé also scored once in the 1970 FIFA World Cup final. CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil) and CSA (Centro Sportivo Alagoano) both use the Estádio Rei Pelé for home matches. They became the first sports clubs from Alagoas with 100,000 followers on their main social media page.
