The construction of the Estádio Governador Carlos Wilson Campos, also known as Arena de Pernambuco, started in 2010. It hosted five FIFA World Cup matches in 2014. The national football team of the Côte d’Ivoire won the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the venue after beating Japan 2-1. 40,000 spectators attended the game. The stadium is featured on the 16th episode of the 25th season of the world famous animated sitcom The Simpsons. During the episode, Homer Simpson becomes a FIFA World Cup referee.
