The construction of the Arena Pantanal, which is among the main sports venues in Mato Grosso, started in 2010. On 13 June 2014, the stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup match. The national football team of Chile won the game against Australia 3-1. 40,000 people attended the match. A few days later, the Arena Pantanal hosted its second FIFA World Cup game. The match between Russia and Korea ended in a 1-1 draw. The stadium’s third world championship game was won by Nigeria after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0. The last 2014 FIFA World Cup game at the Arena Pantanal was won by Colombia after defeating Japan. The Colombians scored four goals and the Japanese scored once.
The Copa América and Ángel Fabián Di María
In June 2021, the Arena Pantanal hosted five games for the Copa América. The national football teams of the Argentine Republic, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay played at the venue during the tournament. The Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina, won the tournament after beating Brazil 1-0. Ángel Fabián Di María scored the only goal of the match. He played professional football for the Argentine side Rosario Central, the Portuguese side Benfica, the Spanish side Real Madrid, the English side Manchester United and the French side Paris Saint-Germain before he scored the goal.
Tenants
Cuiabá Esporte Clube and Mixto Esporte Clube both use the Arena Pantanal for home matches. Mixto EC, nicknamed Alvinegro, was founded in 1934. Cuiabá EC, nicknamed Dourado, was founded in 2001. Cuiabá Esporte Clube became the first sports club from Cuiabá with 100,000 followers on its main social media page. In 2021, they played their first-ever Brazilian top-flight football league games. Cuiabá EC finished 15th place in their maiden top-flight football league season.
