The construction of the Arena das Dunas started in 2011. The national football teams of Cameroon, Ghana, the Hellenic Republic, the Italian Republic, Japan, the United Mexican States, the United States and Uruguay played at the venue during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Mexicans won the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the stadium 1-0. Oribe Peralta Morones scored the only goal of the game. The United Mexican States defeated Cameroon in front of 39,000 spectators.
