On 14 June 2014, the stadium hosted its first match for the prestigious FIFA World Cup. The national football team of the Italian Republic, commonly known as Italy, won the game after beating England in front of a crowd of 39,000. Claudio Marchisio scored the first FIFA World Cup goal at the Arena da Amazônia – Vivaldo Lima. He scored the goal for the Italian Republic. Daniel Andre Sturridge scored the second FIFA World Cup goal at the venue. He scored the goal for England. Mario Balotelli Barwuah scored the second FIFA World Cup goal for the Italians in the first FIFA World Cup game at the stadium.
