The stadium, which is also known as a venue for rugby union, was renovated several times. It was one of the six 1978 FIFA World Cup venues. The national football teams of the Argentine Republic, Brazil, Peru, Poland, Tunisia and the United Mexican States played at the stadium during the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Club Atlético Rosario Central use the Estadio Gigante de Arroyito for home games. They won the top-flight football league of the Argentine Republic, also known as Argentina, several times.
