Extra stadium info – Forsyth Barr Stadium
The construction of the Forsyth Barr Stadium, which is located on the island named Te Waipounamu, started in 2009. John Phillip Key opened the stadium. He was the prime minister of New Zealand when he opened the venue. The Forsyth Barr Stadium is known as a venue for several events, like concerts, drifting, football, rugby league and rugby union. World famous artists performed at the stadium. The Highlanders moved to the venue in 2012. The rugby union club was founded in 1996.
The Rugby World Cup
The Forsyth Barr Stadium hosted its first Rugby World Cup match in 2011. The national rugby union team of England won the world championship game against the Argentine Republic in front of a crowd of 30,000. They won two more 2011 Rugby World Cup matches at the Forsyth Barr Stadium. The first one after beating Georgia in front of 20,000 spectators and the second one after defeating Romania in front of 25,000 spectators. The fourth 2011 Rugby World Cup game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium was won by Ireland after beating the Italian Republic in front of 28,000 people.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup
In 2015, the Forsyth Barr Stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup match. Colombia, Hungary, Mali, the Portuguese Republic, Serbia, the United Mexican States and Uruguay played at the venue during the youth football tournament. The stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup game in 2023. The women’s national football teams of the Argentine Republic, Costa Rica, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Portuguese Republic, South Africa, the Swiss Confederation and Vietnam all played at least one 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup match at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.
