The construction of the venue, which has a retractable roof, started in 1997. It opened as the Colonial Stadium. The stadium was known as the Telstra Dome between 2002 and 2009. Between 2009 and 2018, it was known as the Etihad Stadium. The venue, also known as the Docklands Stadium, is used by several Australian Football League clubs. The Melbourne Renegades also use the Marvel Stadium for home games. In 2019, they won the Big Bash League for the first time in their history. The Renegades drew an average home attendance of 21,000 in that Big Bash League season.
A-League clubs
The Marvel Stadium is also sometimes used for home games of football club Melbourne Victory. In 2007, Melbourne Victory were crowned football champions of Australia for the first time in their history after beating Adelaide United 6-0. They defeated Adelaide United at the Marvel Stadium in front of a crowd of 55,000. Melbourne Victory became the second club with an A-League title. In 2006, Sydney FC became the first club with an A-League title after beating the Central Coast Mariners. Sydney Football Club were crowned football champions of Oceania in 2005. That year, they became the first Oceanian football champions from Australia.
Eminem and mixed martial arts
In 2011, the Marvel Stadium hosted its first-ever concert for the world famous rapper who is known as Eminem. He became the best-selling artist of the 2000s in the United States. 61,000 fans attended the concert. In 2015, the venue hosted a mixed martial arts match between Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey. 56,000 people attended the game, a record-breaking crowd for a UFC event. Holly Holm won the match against Ronda Rousey, the first mixed martial artist with 10 million followers on her main social media page.
