The construction of the venue started in 2020. Rugby league club Eastern Suburbs, football club Sydney FC and rugby union club Waratahs use the stadium for home matches. In 2005, Sydney FC were crowned football champions of Oceania for the first time in their history. They won the title after winning a final 2-0. Matthew Bingley and David Allen Zdrilic both scored for Sydney Football Club in the final. Later in 2005, Sydney FC made their debut in the world championship for football clubs. They faced Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica in their first-ever world championship game. Christian Bolaños Navarro scored the only goal in the match. He scored the goal for Deportivo Saprissa.
Sydney FC and the A-League
Sydney Football Club, also known as The Sky Blues, won the inaugural A-League in 2006. They won the Australian top-flight football league title after defeating the Central Coast Mariners from New South Wales 1-0 in front of 41,000 fans. Sydney Football Club drew an average home attendance of 19,000 in their first-ever A-League season. In 2010, Sydney FC won the A-League for the second time in their history after beating Melbourne Victory in a penalty shoot-out. The game took place in Melbourne in front of a crowd of 44,000. Sydney FC won two more A-League titles in the 2010s.
Alessandro Del Piero
Sydney Football Club made world headlines when the club signed the Italian football star Alessandro Del Piero from Juventus in 2012. He became one of the first athletes with 1 million followers on his main social media page. Del Piero won two world championship titles. He won a world championship title with the Italian side Juventus after beating the Argentine side River Plate in 1996. Alessandro Del Piero scored the only goal of the game, which was played in the Japanese city of Tokyo, in the 81th minute of the game. In 2006, he won a world championship title with the national football team of the Italian Republic after beating the French Republic. Del Piero scored in the penalty shoot-out. He ended his professional football career with the Delhi Dynamos from India.
