The venue, formerly known as the Marshall University Stadium, opened in 1991 with a capacity of 28,000. In 2010, the stadium’s record attendance was broken when 41,000 spectators showed up for an American football match involving the Marshall Thundering Herd. The West Virginia Mountaineers won the match. In 1970, the plane with the American football team of the Marshall Thundering Herd crashed, leaving no survivors. The plane crashed after the Thundering Herd played an away game against the East Carolina Pirates.
