The construction of the Bobcat Stadium started in 1979. In 2012, a $33 million expansion brought the capacity of the venue to 30,000. The American football team of the Texas State Bobcats moved to the stadium in 1981. The team is among the most popular intercollegiate American football teams in Texas. The Texas State Bobcats drew an average home attendance of 18,000 in their inaugural league season at the highest level of intercollegiate American football in the United States. The San Antonio Riders, a former American football club, also used the Bobcat Stadium for home games. The club was founded in 1991 and it was dissolved in 1992.
