The construction of the college basketball arena started in 1982 and its construction costs were $33 million. The venue, which was renovated several times, is owned by the University of North Carolina. Various world famous artists performed at the arena. The first-ever concert at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center was a concert of Kenneth Ray Rogers. The concert took place on 12 April 1986.
