The construction of the college basketball arena started in 1982 and its construction costs were $33 million. The venue, which was renovated several times, is owned by the University of North Carolina. Various world-famous artists performed at the arena. The first-ever concert at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center was a concert of Kenneth Ray Rogers. The concert took place on 12 April 1986. The basketball team of the North Carolina Tar Heels, one of the first college basketball teams with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, use the arena for home games.
