The construction of the ballpark started in 1968 and its construction costs were $70 million. The stadium opened with a capacity of 40,000. Since 1993, the Major League Baseball venue has been known as the Kauffman Stadium in honour of the Kansas City Royals’ founding owner. The Kansas City Royals baseball club was founded in 1969. In 1973, the club moved to the Kauffman Stadium. In 2007, the Royals had a red seat placed in the Kauffman Stadium amongst the blue seats to honour the former baseball player John Jordan O’Neil, also known as Buck O’Neil. Every game, there will be a person who embodies the spirit of John Jordan O’Neil selected from community nominees to sit in that seat.
The World Series in the 1980s
The first World Series game at the Kauffman Stadium took place on 17 October 17 1980. The Kansas City Royals faced the Philadelphia Phillies in that match. The Royals won the game 4-3 in front of 42,000 fans. They lost the 1980 World Series, which consisted of six matches. The Royals won the World Series in 1985 for the first time in their history after beating the St. Louis Cardinals. The 1985 World Series consisted of seven games. The Kansas City Royals won four of those six games. The first of those six games took place at the Kauffman Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals won the match in front of a crowd of 41,000.
The Royals and the Mets
In 2015, the Kansas City Royals won their second World Series title after defeating the New York Mets. The Mets won two World Series titles before they faced the Royals in the 2015 World Series. In 1969, they won the World Series for the first time in their history after beating the Baltimore Orioles. In 1986, the Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. The 2015 World Series consisted of five games. The Kansas City Royals won four of those five games. The first of those five games took place at the Kauffman Stadium. The Royals won the match 5-4. 40,000 spectators attended the match.
