The construction costs of the venue started in 2016. The national football team of the United States played their first game at the Allianz Field on 18 June 2019. They won the CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Guyana 4-0. The women’s national football team of the United States played their first game at the venue on 3 September 2019. They won the match against the Portuguese Republic, commonly known as Portugal, 3-0.
Minnesota United and national football teams from the Caribbean
The Allianz Stadium opened with a Major League Soccer match between Minnesota United and New York City Football Club. 19,000 people attended the game, which ended in a 3-3 draw. Osvaldo Alonso, who played various matches for the national football team of Cuba, scored the first goal of the match. In 1938, Cuba became the first team from the Caribbean in the prestigious FIFA World Cup. Haiti became the second team in 1974. Cuba won one FIFA World Cup match in 1938. Haiti lost their three FIFA World Cup games in 1974.
Minnesota United in their first MLS season
Minnesota United, also known as The Loons, played their first Major League Soccer game on 3 March 2017. They lost the game against the Portland Timbers from Oregon. Christian Ramirez, who played for the national football team of the United States, scored the first MLS goal for Minnesota United against the Timbers. A few days later, Minnesota United faced Atlanta United in their first MLS home game. The visitors won the match, which took place in front of 35,000 fans. Minnesota United won their first MLS match on 1 April 2017. They won the game against Real Salt Lake 4-2. Minnesota United drew an average home attendance of 20,000 in their first-ever MLS season.
