The construction of the Michigan Stadium, which opened with an American football match, started in 1926. The venue was renovated several times and it is nicknamed The Big House. On 1 January 2014, the venue broke the record attendance for an ice hockey game. The world record match was between the Detroit Red Wings from Michigan and the Toronto Maple Leafs from Canada. The ice hockey match between the National Hockey League clubs attracted a crowd of 105,000.
Manchester United and Real Madrid
On 2 August 2014, the world famous clubs Manchester United from the United Kingdom and Real Madrid from Spain broke the record attendance for a football game in the United States. A crowd of 109,000 showed up for the game between both football giants at the Michigan Stadium. Manchester United won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008 for the first time in their history and Real Madrid won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014 for the first time in their history.
The return of the football giants
Real Madrid, the first sports team in the world with 100 million followers on its main social media page, faced Chelsea in their second game at the Michigan Stadium. The match took place in 2016. Real Madrid won the game against Chelsea in front of 105,000 spectators. In 2018, Manchester United faced Liverpool FC in their second match at the Michigan Stadium. Liverpool FC won the game in front of a crowd of 101,000.
The Michigan Wolverines
The American football team of the Michigan Wolverines played numerous matches at the Michigan Stadium with attendances above 100,000. On 7 September 2013, 115,000 fans attended an American football match between the Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Michigan Stadium. The stadium’s record attendance was broken that day. The Michigan Wolverines won the game 41-30.
