The construction of the stadium, which is among the main sports venues in Maryland, started in 1989. Its construction costs were $110 million. The Major League Baseball venue is also known as Birdland and The House that Cal Built. In 1993, the Oriole Park hosted its first-ever Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The match, which was the 64th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, attracted a crowd of 48,000.
The Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles use the Oriole Park for home matches. They moved to the venue in 1992. The ballpark opened with a baseball match between the Orioles and the club which is currently known as the Cleveland Guardians. The home side won the game 2-0 in front of 44,000 people. George Herbert Walker Bush, who became the 41st president of the United States, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. On 9 July 2005, the stadium’s record attendance was broken when 49,000 fans showed up for a baseball match between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox from Massachusetts. The Orioles won the game 9-1.
The World Series
The Orioles won the World Series several times. In 1966, they won the World Series for the first time in their history after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers from California four consecutive times. All four games took place in October 1966. The first 1966 World Series match between the Orioles and the Dodgers took place in California in front of 55,000 spectators. The first 1966 World Series game in Baltimore took place on 8 October 1966. 54,000 fans showed up for the match. In 1970, the Baltimore Orioles won the World Series for the second time in their history. They won the title after defeating the Cincinnati Reds from Ohio. The Orioles won another World Series title in the 20th century after beating the Philadelphia Phillies from Pennsylvania in 1983.
Michael Fred Phelps
Michael Fred Phelps, the first athlete with 23 Olympic gold medals, became a Baltimore Orioles fan. He was born in Baltimore in 1985. Phelps became the first Olympic swimmer with 1 million followers on his main social media page. In 2004, he won his first Olympic medals in the Greek city of Athens. Phelps also won Olympic medals in the Chinese city of Beijing, the British city of London and the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
