The stadium, which is owned by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, opened in 1923 with a capacity of 55,000. It was renovated several times. The stadium’s record attendance was broken in 1984, when 78,000 fans showed up for an American football match which included the Illinois Fighting Illini. In 2002, the Chicago Bears played several NFL games at the Memorial Stadium.
