The construction of the AMALIE Arena started in 1994. The city of Tampa paid $86 million and the Tampa Bay Lightning paid $53 million for the arena’s construction and infrastructure. The venue opened as the Ice Palace and it is also known as a venue for basketball, concerts, indoor American football and wrestling. The Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup several times. They won their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2004. During that NHL season, the Tampa Bay Lightning drew an average attendance of 17,000 in 41 home games. The Lightning became the first club from Florida with a Stanley Cup title.
