The construction of the venue started in 2017. In 2019, the stadium hosted its first-ever match for the national football team of the United States. 17,000 people showed up for the game, which was won by Jamaica after Shamar Amaro Nicholson scored the only goal of the match. Later that year, the national football team of the United States played their second game at the Audi Field. They won the match against Cuba 7-0. The women’s national football team of the United States played their first match at the Audi Field in 2022. The game, which was won by the United States after beating Nigeria 2-1, attracted a crowd of 18,000.
Tenants
DC United and the Washington Spirit use the Audi Field for home matches. Both football clubs moved to the stadium in 2018. On 14 July 2018, the Audi Field hosted its first Major League Soccer match. DC United won the game against the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1. 20,000 people attended the match. DC United, one of the first football clubs from the United States with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, was founded in 1996. In 1998, they won the North American championship for football clubs for the first time in their history after beating the Mexican side Deportivo Toluca. That year, DC United drew an average home attendance of 16,000 in 16 Major League Soccer matches.
Wayne Rooney
In 2018, DC United signed the English football star Wayne Mark Rooney, one of the first football players with 10 million followers on his main social media page. Rooney played numerous matches for Everton Football Club, Manchester United Football Club and the national football team of England before he joined DC United. He won the FIFA Club World Cup with Manchester United in 2008. Wayne Rooney left DC United in 2020. He signed with the English side Derby County FC that year. In 2022, Rooney became the manager of DC United.
