The construction of the Snapdragon Stadium, which became one of the largest stadiums by capacity in California, started in 2020. Its construction costs were $310 million. The venue is owned by the San Diego State University. World famous artists performed at the stadium. The national football team of the United States played their first game at the Snapdragon Stadium on 12 July 2023. 31,000 fans showed up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final, which was won by Panama after a penalty shoot-out. The women’s national football team of the United States played their first match at the Snapdragon Stadium on 29 October 2023. They won the game against Colombia, which attracted a crowd of 16,000, 3-0.
On 25 July 2023, the world famous football club Manchester United from the United Kingdom visited the Snapdragon Stadium. They faced Wrexham AFC, the oldest football club from Wales, at the venue in front of 34,000 spectators. It was the first time that a football club with at least one world championship title played at the stadium. Manchester United won their first world championship title in 1999 after defeating the Brazilian side Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. In 2008, they won their second world championship title after beating LDU from Ecuador.
Two days after the match between Manchester United Football Club and Wrexham AFC, the German side Borussia Dortmund played at the venue. They won their first world championship title in 1997 after beating Cruzeiro Esporte Clube from Brazil. Earlier that year, Borussia Dortmund won their first UEFA Champions League title after defeating the Italian side Juventus.
The stadium became the home of San Diego Football Club, San Diego Legion, the American football team of the San Diego State Aztecs and the San Diego Wave. San Diego FC became Major League Soccer members. The football club was founded in 2023. The San Diego Legion perform in Major League Rugby. In 2018, they played in the first-ever edition of Major League Rugby. The American football team of the San Diego State Aztecs are among the main intercollegiate American football teams from California. The San Diego Wave play their domestic league games in the National Women’s Soccer League. 32,000 fans showed up for their first match at the Snapdragon Stadium. The game became one of the first NWSL games with an attendance of at least 30,000.
