The construction of the venue, which opened as the Avaya Stadium, started in 2012. Its construction costs were $100 million. The PayPal Park is known as a venue for several events, like field lacrosse, football, rugby union and ultimate. On 24 March 2017, the stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifier. The national football team of the United States won the match against Honduras 6-0 in front of 17,000 spectators.

In 1996, the Clash played in the maiden MLS season. They drew an average home attendance of 17,000 in that Major League Soccer season. The San Jose Clash won the first-ever Major League Soccer game after beating DC United. Eric Boswell Wynalda scored the only goal of the match. It was a goal for the Clash. The first MLS game took place in California in front of 31,000 people. Bay Football Club was founded in 2023. The club joined the National Women’s Soccer League. The NWSL became one of the major women’s football leagues in the world.
