The construction of the football venue, which opened as the Banc of California Stadium, started in 2016. Its construction costs were $350 million. Angel City Football Club and Los Angeles Football Club both use the BMO Stadium for home matches. LAFC was founded in 2014 and Angel City FC was founded in 2020. LAFC, one of the first sports clubs from California with a value of at least $1 billion, played their first-ever Major League Soccer match on 4 March 2018. They won the game against the Seattle Sounders 1-0. Diego Rossi from Uruguay scored the only goal of the match. Los Angeles Football Club drew an average home attendance of 22,000 in their first-ever Major League Soccer season.
The LA Galaxy and Zlatan Ibrahimović
On 31 March 2018, LAFC suffered their first MLS loss giving up a 3–0 lead, to lose 4–3 to the LA Galaxy. The world famous Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who made his debut for the LA Galaxy in that game, scored two goals in that match. He played professional football for Malmö FF, Ajax, Juventus, Internazionale, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United before he signed with the LA Galaxy.
Record attendance
On 4 July 2023, 82,000 fans attended a match between the LA Galaxy and LAFC. It was a record attendance for a Major League Soccer game. The match took place in Pasadena. The LA Galaxy won the game 2-1. Tyler Dominic Boyd scored the first goal of the match. Ilie Sánchez Farrés scored the equalizer for LAFC. Ricard Puig Martí scored the winning goal for the LA Galaxy. He played various matches for the world famous Spanish side FC Barcelona before he signed the Galaxy in 2022.
