The Plaza México is among the main sports venues in the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico. It is used for several events, like boxing, bullfighting, concerts and tennis. The Mexican boxer Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, nicknamed Canelo Álvarez because of his hair colour, played boxing matches at the Plaza México. He became a world title holder after beating Kermit Cintrón from Puerto Rico. Álvarez became the highest-paid boxer in the world. In 2019, 42,000 people showed up for a tennis match at the Plaza México. It became a record attendance for a singles tennis game. The match was won by Roger Federer from the Swiss Confederation after defeating Alexander Zverev from Germany.
