The Estadio León is nicknamed Nou Camp. It became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico. In 1968, the stadium hosted football matches for the Games of the Olympiad. It also hosted seven FIFA World Cup matches in 1970 and four FIFA World Cup matches in 1986. The first-ever FIFA World Cup game at the venue took place on 2 June 1970. The national football team of Peru won the match against Bulgaria 3-2. 13,000 people attended the world championship match. In 1986, the Estadio León hosted the first-ever FIFA World Cup game of the national football team of Canada. 36,000 people showed up for the match.
Club León
Club León, also known as La Fiera, Los Esmeraldas, Los Panzas Verdes or Los Verdiblancos, use the Estadio León for home games. The club was founded in 1944. It became one of the first Mexican sports clubs with 1 million followers on its main social media page. They won the Mexican top-flight football league several times. In 1948, Club León were crowned Mexican football champions for the first time in their history. They won the Mexican cup tournament in 1949 for the first time in their history after beating Atlante FC.

Club León won their first-ever North American football championship title in 2023. They won the North American championship for football clubs after beating Los Angeles Football Club from the United States in a two-legged final. The first leg took place at the Estadio León in front of 20,000 spectators. Club León won the game 2-1. They also won the second leg, which took place in the city of Los Angeles in front of 22,000 spectators.
