The venue is named after a former football player. Atlante Fútbol Club use the venue for home games. The club was founded in 1916. In the 1940s, they played in the inaugural edition of the Mexican top-flight football league. Atlante finished fourth place in that league season. In 1947, they were crowned Mexican football champions for the first time in their history. On 1 February 1984, Atlante FC won the North American championship for football clubs for the first time in their history. They made their debut in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009. Atlante reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
