The construction of the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano started in 1995. The national football team of Honduras, nicknamed Los Catrachos, use the venue for home games. They were crowned football champions of North America in 1981 for the first time in their history. In 1982, the national football team of Honduras played their first-ever FIFA World Cup matches. They played their first-ever FIFA World Cup game against Spain on 16 June 1982. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
