The stadium is known as a venue for several events, like athletics, concerts, football and rugby sevens. The first football match at the venue ended in a 2-2 draw. The national football team of Costa Rica, also known as Los Ticos, faced China in that match. In 1963, Los Ticos were crowned football champions of North America for the first time in their history. The national football team of Costa Rica played their first-ever FIFA World Cup match in 1990. They won the game, which took place in the Italian Republic, 1-0. It was a game against Scotland. Óscar Antonio Ramírez Hernández and Rónald Alfonso González Brenes both played for Costa Rica in that match. They both became the manager of the national football team of Costa Rica in the 2010s.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup
In 2014, the national football team of Costa Rica reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history. In the quarter-finals, they were beaten by the Netherlands after Míchael Umaña Corrales missed the last penalty in the penalty shoot-out. The national football team of the Netherlands, nicknamed Oranje, finished third place in the 2014 FIFA World Cup after beating Brazil.
