The first National Hockey League match at the venue named Rogers Centre took place on 12 October 2016. 18,000 fans showed up for the NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. The Oilers won the Stanley Cup various times. Wayne Gretzky, who was born in Canada, played for the Edmonton Oilers. He is generally regarded as one of the best ice hockey players ever. Wayne Gretzky ended his professional ice hockey career with the New York Rangers.
