The venue hosted its first Rugby World Cup match in 1991. The national rugby union team of Japan defeated Zimbabwe 52-8 in that match. Ulster Rugby use the Kingspan Stadium for home games. The rugby union club was founded in 1879. It became one of the first rugby union clubs with 100,000 followers on its main social media page. In 1999, Ulster Rugby won the tournament which was founded as the Heineken Cup for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating the French side named Colomiers Rugby in the Irish city of Dublin in front of a crowd of 49,000.
