The construction of the venue started in 1992 and its construction costs were £16 million. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in London. Millwall Football Club, nicknamed The Lions, moved to The Den in 1993. On 4 August 1993, they lost their first match at The Den against Sporting Clube de Portugal. Millwall FC drew an average home attendance of 10,000 in their first league season at the venue. Millwall Football Club was founded in 1885. In 2004, they played their first-ever FA Cup final. Millwall lost the game against Manchester United. The FA Cup final took place in the city of Cardiff in front of 71,000 spectators.
Tim Cahill
Timothy Filiga Cahill, who became the top scorer of the national football team of Australia, played his first professional game for Millwall FC. He was born in Sydney in 1979. Cahill made his Millwall debut on 2 May 1998 against AFC Bournemouth. In 2004, he left Millwall for Everton Football Club. Tim Cahill played professional football in the United States, China and Australia before he returned to Millwall in 2018. Later that year, Cahill signed with Jamshedpur Football Club from India. In 2019, he ended his professional football career with Jamshedpur FC.
Movies about hooliganism
Millwall’s fans have often been associated with hooliganism, with numerous movies having been made fictionalising their notoriety. One of those movies is Green Street, which stars Charles Matthew Hunnam and Elijah Wood. The movie is about a college student from the United States who falls in with a violent West Ham United football firm run by his brother-in-law’s younger brother. The college student named Matthew Buckner is played by Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in the world famous film series named The Lord of the Rings.
