During World War II, the stadium suffered bomb damage. Birmingham City Football Club use the venue for home matches. The club was founded in 1875 under a different name. They reached the final of the FA Cup in 1931 for the first time in their history. Birmingham City lost the final against West Bromwich Albion 2-1. Joseph Bradford scored the only goal for Birmingham City FC in the final, which took place in London in front of 92,000 spectators. In 1935, Birmingham City faced arch-rivals Aston Villa at the stadium named St. Andrew’s. 60,000 people attended the game, which became the best-attended league game at the venue.
Trevor Francis
Trevor Francis, who became the highest-paid English football player, started his professional career with Birmingham City Football Club in 1971. Birmingham City FC loaned him out to the Detroit Express, a former football club from the United States. The Detroit Express from Michigan drew an average home attendance of 12,000 in their inaugural league season with Trevor Francis. Later, Trevor Francis won the European championship for football clubs twice with Nottingham Forest. He died in Spain in 2023 at the age of 69.
