Oldham Rugby League Football Club, nicknamed Roughyeds, was founded in 1876. Oldham Athletic Association Football Club, nicknamed Latics, was founded in 1895 under a different name. In 1910, they played their first-ever English top-flight football league match. Oldham Athletic drew an average home attendance of 14,000 during that league season.
