The construction of the football venue, which is also known as the Falmer Stadium, started in 2008. Its construction costs were £93 million. On 19 September 2015, the venue hosted its first-ever Rugby World Cup game. The national rugby union team of Japan won the match against South Africa. A crowd of 29,000 showed up for the world championship game. The second Rugby World Cup match at the American Express Stadium was won by the national rugby union team of Samoa after beating the United States.
