The construction of the venue, which is also known as the Falmer Stadium, started in 2008. Its construction costs were £93 million. The American Express Community Stadium opened with a match between tenants Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC. The visitors from London won the game. Brighton & Hove Albion became the first football team from East Sussex with 100,000 followers on its main social media page.

Brighton & Hove Albion, nicknamed The Seagulls, drew an average home attendance of 20,000 in their first domestic football league season at the stadium.
