The construction of the venue started in 2008. On 9 June 2012, the stadium hosted its first-ever match for the European championship for national football teams. Germany won the match after beating the Portuguese Republic, commonly known as Portugal, 1-0. Mario Gómez García scored the only goal of the game, which attracted a crowd of 32,000. Football Club Lviv and Football Club Rukh both use the stadium named Arena Lviv for home games. Both clubs were founded in the 21st century. FC Lviv and Rukh both played numerous matches in the top-flight football league of Ukraine.
