The venue is also known as the Stade de la Praille. It is used for several events, like concerts, football, ice hockey and rugby union. The stadium opened with a football match between the national football teams of the Swiss Confederation and the Italian Republic. A capacity crowd of 30,000 showed up for the game, which was won by the visitors. The Stade de Genève was one of the stadiums for the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship.
The Portuguese Republic versus Türkiye
The stadium’s first 2008 UEFA European Football Championship game took place on 7 June 2008. The national football team of the Portuguese Republic, commonly known as Portugal, won the group-stage match after beating Türkiye 2-0. Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, commonly known as Pepe, scored the first goal of the game. He played numerous matches for Real Madrid, the first sports club with 100 million followers on its main social media page. Raul José Trindade Meireles scored the second goal of the match, which attracted a crowd of 29,000.

On 11 June 2008, the Stade de Genève hosted its second game for the UEFA European Football Championship, the European championship for national football teams. The Portuguese Republic won the group-stage match against the Czech Republic 3-1. The Stade de Genève also hosted a UEFA European Football Championship game between Türkiye and the Czech Republic. Türkiye won the group-stage match 3-2.
Servette FC
Servette FC, one of the major Swiss sports clubs, moved to the Stade de Genève in 2003. In 1907, they were crowned Swiss football champions for the first time in their history. Servette FC were crowned Swiss football champions 17 times in the 20th century. In 1928, they won the Swiss cup tournament for the first time in their history. Servette FC won the title after defeating Grasshopper Club Zürich.
