The construction costs of the stadium were €45 million. It underwent a €240 million renovation in the 2010s. Thomas Cruise Mapother, who became one of the highest-paid actors in the world, showed up at the venue during the renovation. The football stadium became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Spain. On 27 March 2018, the venue hosted its first match of the national football team of Spain. They defeated the Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina, 6-1. The Argentine Republic won their first-ever FIFA World Cup title in 1986. Spain won their first-ever FIFA World Cup title in 2010. They won the title after beating the Netherlands in South Africa.
The European championship for football clubs
On 1 June 2019, the stadium hosted its first-ever UEFA Champions League final. Liverpool FC were crowned European football champions at the venue after beating Tottenham Hotspur in front of 63,000 spectators. Mohamed Salah Hamed Mahrous Ghaly from Egypt scored the first goal of the match and Divock Okoth Origi from Belgium scored the second goal of the match. It was one of the first UEFA Champions League finals between two English clubs.

Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Grecia, who became the king of Spain in 2014, attended the match. Antoine Griezmann from the French Republic scored the only goal of the game.
