The stadium opened with a football match between Cádiz Club de Fútbol and FC Barcelona. Cádiz CF, the first sports club from Cádiz with 1 million followers on its main social media page, played their first-ever Spanish top-flight league match in 1977. They won seven of the 34 league games during that football season. Cádiz CF were relegated immediately after their maiden top-flight league season.
