The stadium, which is named after a former chairman of Hércules de Alicante Club de Fútbol, was one of the 1982 FIFA World Cup venues. It hosted three FIFA World Cup games in 1982. The first two were won by the national football team of the Argentine Republic after beating Hungary and El Salvador. The third one was won by Poland after defeating the French Republic.
