The Estadio de Gran Canaria became the largest sports venue by capacity on the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago on the African continent. Several world-famous artists performed at the stadium, which used to have an athletics track. The national football team of Spain played several matches at the venue. On 18 August 2004, they won their first game at the Estadio de Gran Canaria 3-2. 31,000 people attended the match between Spain and Venezuela. The national football team of Spain also won their second match at the stadium after beating Northern Ireland 1-0. The match took place on 21 November 2007.
The opening of the stadium
The Estadio de Gran Canaria opened with a football match between UD Las Palmas and the Belgian side RSC Anderlecht. The home side won the match 2-1. Rubén Castro Martín, who was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1981, scored the first goal of the match. A year after the opening of the Estadio de Gran Canaria, UD Las Palmas drew an average home attendance of 14,000 in 21 league matches.
The history of UD Las Palmas
Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, the first sports club from the Canary Islands with 1 million followers on its main social media page, was founded in 1949. They played their first-ever Spanish top-flight football league game in 1951. UD Las Palmas were relegated after they finished 15th place in their inaugural Spanish top-flight football league season. In 1969, they finished below the Spanish football champions Real Madrid. UD Las Palmas won 15 of the 30 domestic top-flight football league games during that football season. They played their first-ever Spanish cup final in 1978. Unión Deportiva Las Palmas lost the final, which took place in the city of Madrid, against FC Barcelona. Miguel Ángel Brindisi de Marco scored the only goal for UD Las Palmas in the cup final.
