The stadium hosted 1982 FIFA World Cup matches of the national football teams of Belgium, El Salvador and Hungary. Elche Club de Fútbol, one of the first Spanish sports clubs with 1 million followers on its main social media page, use the venue for home games. The club was founded in 1923. They played their first-ever Spanish top-flight football league games in 1959.
