The stadium is named after a former player of the national football team of the USSR. He was born in Sochi and he won the Soviet Top League with Torpedo Moscow and Dinamo Tbilisi. In 1960, Slavia Metreveli won the European championship for national football teams with the USSR after defeating Yugoslavia 2-1. Metreveli scored one goal in the final. In 1966, Metreveli reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup with the USSR.
