The arena, which is located in the Asian part of Russia, opened with a Kontinental Hockey League match between HC Avangard en HC Sibir. Hockey Club Avangard was founded in 1950 under a different name. The club was renamed several times before it became HC Avangard in 1981. In 2021, Avangard won the Gagarin Cup for the first time in their history. Ilya Valeryevich Kovalchuk played for Avangard in that ice hockey season. He became the top scorer of the national ice hockey team of Russia.
