The construction of the stadium, which is located in Ghencea, started in 2019. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Romania. The stadium opened with a football match, which was won 6-0 by Clubul Sportiv al Armatei Steaua București. The football club was founded in 1947 under a different name. Steaua București were crowned Romanian football champions numerous times. They also won the Romanian cup tournament numerous times.
The European championship for football clubs
In 1986, Steaua București were crowned European football champions for the first time in their history. They won the title after defeating the Spanish football giants FC Barcelona, the second sports club with 100 million followers on its main social media page. Steaua drew an average home attendance of 20,000 in that domestic top-flight football league season. The final between Clubul Sportiv al Armatei Steaua București and FC Barcelona took place in the Spanish city of Seville in front of a crowd of 70,000. Steaua reached the final after winning against the Belgian side RSC Anderlecht. FC Barcelona reached the final after winning against the Swedish side IFK Göteborg.
The world championship for football clubs
Steaua București lost their only Toyota Cup match on 14 December 1986. Club Atlético River Plate from the Argentine Republic won the Toyota Cup, the former world championship for football clubs, that day. Antonio Alzamendi Casas scored the only goal of the game. He played various matches for the national football team of Uruguay, the first team with a FIFA World Cup title. The world championship game between River Plate and Steaua București took place in the Japanese city of Tokyo. A crowd of 62,000 attended the world championship match.
