The stadium opened with a football match between Vitória Sport Clube and 1. FC Kaiserslautern from Germany. It was one of the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship venues. A few months before the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship started, the stadium witnessed the collapse of the former Sport Lisboa e Benfica player Miklós Fehér. This occurred during a domestic league game between Vitória SC and Benfica. Late into the second half, Fehér collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. This resulted in the death of the former player of the national football team of Hungary.
